The hammer should be almost a milestone in defining oneself as a ‘mosaic artist’. Yet right at the beginning of a career, whether short or brilliant, paths can immediately diverge. The most tenacious, especially if supported by a well-designed mosaic course, choose to work with the hammer right away and sometimes never stop using it, even for the tiniest details. Others, on the other hand, resort to using pliers with pre-cut tiles, which greatly simplifies their work. Most women tend to choose a lighter weight to avoid excessive effort. In our opinion, this is the wrong choice. The lighter the hammer, the harder the blow must be.

The hardie works in contrast to the hammer. Shaped like a large conical chisel, it must normally be fixed in a support that is not completely rigid, and is best placed in a tree stump. The steel hardie is not only the cheapest but also undoubtedly the most popular and widely used. The carbide hardie is useful for its extremely long life or if you frequently work on very hard stones.

Pliers are an essential tool for mosaicists. Various types are available on the market: the most efficient for stone and marble have flat blades. For smalti and glassy materials, on the other hand, pliers with discs are recommended. Both types of pliers have carbide blades, thus guaranteeing a very long life. The discs are also replaceable, allowing you to save on the cost of the pliers themselves.
