Known among artisans as Greek pitch, it appears as a transparent resinous mass, ranging from pale yellow to dark amber.
The fragments are translucent and it is brittle at room temperature. It has a faint taste and odor of turpentine. It melts easily when heated. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene, chloroform, turpentine spirit, acetic acid, benzene, alkaline hydroxides, and generally in organic solvents. It is used in the manufacture of adhesives and sealing wax.
In the past it was used for gluing marble or for stone restoration.
