The topping bit or in Italian scapezzino is a blunt tool designed to be deliberately imprecise. It is widely used to remove large portions of stone from the edges of fireplaces, or to create the typical uneven surface. It is also used on the edge. It does not require great manual skill and must be struck firmly from above. Given the slanted profile of the blade, it easily removes up to 10 cm of thickness.

  • The Hand steel pitcher is a squat and deliberately imprecise tool. Widely used to detach large portions of stone from the edges of fireplaces, or to create the typical irregular surface. It is also used on the eyelash. It does not require great manual skill and must be struck decisively from above, given the inclined blade profile it easily detaches up to 10 cm. thick.
    The pitching tool is used for cracking out large chunks of stones off the edge of a square block. Fireplaces are the best samples.
