Calico canvas is used in various fields. In mosaics, it is used for the indirect method technique.
It has a denser and more resistant weave than tarlatan. It is glued onto the tiles to remove them from their lime bed.
The tiles are glued onto the canvas using flour paste (see the binders and adhesives category).
It is applied over a layer of Mapei IP 10 or Kerabond. Finally, the canvas is removed and the tiles are cleaned of any glue residue.
In restoration, it is used for the strappo technique on frescoes.
