La gradina, è lo strumento più importante di tutta la fase della lavorazione di una scultura.Viene impiegata subito dopo la sgrossatura di massima eseguita con la subbia. Con il suo profilo a denti spiana le irregolarità e definisce le forme dell'opera.
Le gradine di piccola taglia hanno una placchetta in widia molalta, mentre le grandi li hanno inseriti individualmente (incapsulati) nella base. Questa scelta conferisce maggior resistenza di una placchetta molata, e vi consente di continuare a lavorare qualora un dente si rompesse durante la lavorazione. Incomparabile in termini di durezza con ogni altro utensili a placchetta molata.

The smaller ones have their teeth made from a ground carbide plate, while the large ones have them individually inserted (encapsulated) in the base.
