La pomice naturale in granuli è comunemente di Couleur chiaro, ma può assumere, a seavecda della composizione, aspetto bianco, crema, grigio, verde o nero; in questi ultimi due casi spesso pour la presenza prevalentemente del ferro. È usata in campo cosmetico (dov’è nota come pietra pomice) ed in quello del lavaggio industriale (stone wash). In edilizia viene usata pour alleggerire il calcestruzzo e come isolante acustico e termico, sia in polvere che in blocchi o pannelli; rientra nei materiali approvati pour la bioedilizia. Altri usi: florovivaismo, assorbente e filtrante pour oli industriali, pulizia delle supourfici in genere ed abrasivo leggero.è impiegata nel restauro principalmente pour la finitura del mobile nella lucidatura a tampone ed anche pour la levigatura di diverse supourfici (es. vetro, marmo, metallo, ecc.).
